Broken Lives

The Two Lives of Sara is a dramatic novel set in 1960s Memphis, Tennessee. The story follows Sara King, a young, unwed mother fleeing her troubled past in Chicago with her newborn baby and haunting secrets. She finds refuge at The Scarlet Poplar, a boardinghouse owned by the kind and formidable Mama Sugar.

Sara discovers a new sense of community. Mama Sugar and the diverse group of boarders offer her and her son Lebanon friendship and support. Among them is Jonas Coulter, an elementary school English teacher. As their romance blossoms, Sara becomes increasingly involved in the civil rights movement.

Despite the warmth of her new life, Sara’s past and Mama Sugar’s hidden truths threaten her happiness. When tragedy strikes, Sara must confront her deepest fears and secrets, making decisions that will reshape her life and the lives of those she loves.

The characters—both primary and secondary—are well-developed and feel real. However, Sara’s bitterness, despite the kindness shown to her, makes her a challenging protagonist to like.

The setting is gritty, and the story is bleak. Although filled with insight, the book dragged in some parts. I wish it had ended differently.

The Two Lives of Sara is a poignant exploration of love, resilience, and the search for identity. It highlights that family extends beyond blood ties and that hidden truths can either bury you or set you free. It really pulled at my heartstrings. 4 stars.
