Antihero was my first introduction to Gregg Hurwitz’s Orphan X series, and boy, have I been missing out! A friend recommended it, so I jumped at the chance to snag a complimentary copy from NetGalley. I’m glad I took his advice!
Evan Smoak is a former government assassin who now uses his considerable talents to help people in desperate situations. His latest mission involves a young woman who has been kidnapped and assaulted. Evan is determined to bring her attackers to justice, but she has one condition: No killing. Easier said than done for a man who has spent much of his life eliminating bad guys!
Hurwitz is an excellent writer. His sharp prose, terrific pacing, and well-developed characters make this a thriller that’s hard to put down. I was on the edge of my seat and couldn’t turn the pages fast enough!
Now for the pans. This book isn’t for the faint of heart. There are some truly despicable characters and plenty of violence. If this were a movie, I’d have spent half the time peeking through my fingers! Content warning: Sex trafficking and pornography production play a significant role in the story.
Despite jumping into the series at book eleven, I had no trouble following along. But I’m not stopping here. I’ve got ten books to catch up on! I alternated between the eBook and audio, and narrator Scott Brick does an amazing job!
Thanks to NetGalley, Minotaur Books, and Macmillan Audio for complimentary copies. All opinions are my own.
